Children love to paint no matter the age. As a mom of two under two years old, I had to be very creative in terms of using different materials. Being a teacher as well I was very eager to give them opportunities for a messy play like painting, dough, textures etc. So I searched and found on the internet a great idea to use yoghurt and food colouring to create edible baby paint. My two busy bees were so happy to stick their fingers both on the paper and in the mouth during this activity.
Now, I am going to share this simple recipe with you to try out with your younger or older children.
What do you need to make edible paint
You will need only plain yoghurt and food colouring. I used plain greek yoghurt because I found it thick and with a great texture. Also, both of my babies have this since we introduced solids so I was not worried about any food intolerance. Then I added a few drops of thick food colouring and I mixed very well with a spatula. The edible paint is ready now to be used. Of course, it needs to be used quick and made fresh again in case of use. Being made mainly from yoghurt can not be kept outside for long.
Fun ways to use edible paint
Finger painting Stamping using paint sponges Hand printing
Firstly I let them stick freely their hands in the paint. Of course, mine being so young they tried with their mouths as well. When I see they start to lose their interest I introduced new resources. In this case, I gave them sponges and modelled to them how to stamp with it.
They had fun for a while playing in and with the edible paint, considering their ages.
