As a mother of two different babies, I understand the importance of nighttime phasing for babies. Night-time phasing refers to the changes that occur in a baby’s sleep patterns as they grow and develop. It is important for parents to understand these changes and adjust their baby’s sleep schedule accordingly.

At 6 months old, babies are typically sleeping for longer stretches at night and require fewer feedings. A typical sleep and feeding schedule for a 6-month-old may look like this:

7:00 am – Wake up and first feeding

8:30 am – Morning nap

10:00 am – Second feeding

12:00pm – Afternoon nap

2:00 pm – Third feeding

4:00 pm – Late afternoon nap

5:30 pm – Fourth feeding

7:00 pm – Start bedtime routine (bath, massage, etc.)

7:30 pm – Final feeding

8:00 pm – Bedtime

It is important to establish a consistent bedtime routine to help your baby associate these activities with bedtime. This can include a bath, massage, story time, or any other soothing activities that help your baby wind down and prepare for sleep.

During the night, it is normal for babies to wake up and need to be comforted or fed. However, it is important to gradually teach your baby to self-soothe and fall back asleep on their own. This can be done by gradually reducing the amount of time you spend comforting them, such as by gradually reducing the amount of time you spend holding or rocking them.

As your baby grows and develops, their sleep patterns will continue to change. It is important to adjust their sleep schedule accordingly to ensure they are getting the rest they need. This may involve gradually reducing the number of naps or adjusting bedtime.

If you are struggling with your baby’s sleep patterns, a sleep consultant can help. They can provide personalized advice and strategies to help your baby develop healthy sleep habits and ensure they are getting the rest they need to grow and thrive.
